Al Shabab May Not Release Ighalo For AFCON

Odion Ighalo, Super Eagles striker, may not participate in the forthcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

An insider with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) told TheCable that Al Shabab, Ighalo’s Saudi Arabia Pro League side, have refused to allow him to link up with his international teammates.

Ighalo, who was the highest goal scorer at the 2019 AFCON, was on the scoresheet for his club in their 4-3 win over Al-Ahli Saudi on Saturday.

TheCable understands that the NFF is doing everything possible to ensure that Al Shabab allow Ighalo to join the three-time African champions on time for the African football showpiece.

“Because Ighalo is their highest goal scorer and he also scored in their game on Saturday, they do not want to release him,” the insider said.

“They do not want him to leave for the AFCON so that he can help them have a shot at winning the league this season.

“You know that he has netted 11 goals for them this season and they are second on the table with a hope of winning the league if they continue to win and Ighalo keeps scoring goals for them.

TheCable had earlier reported how Victor Osimhen and Emmanuel Dennis were replaced in the Super Eagles 28-man provisional list by Henry Onyekuru and Peter Olayinka respectively over controversial reasons.

“But I can assure you that NFF is doing everything possible to ensure that he is released. Because after Osimhen pulled out and Dennis too was not released by Watford, we can’t afford not to have Ighalo in the team,” the source added.

“It will be devastating for the Eagles if Al Shabab refused to allow him join the team for Cameroon.”

Super Eagles First Training Session At The Teslim Balogun Stadium (Photos, Video)

Nigeria’s largest city Lagos will host a competitive men’s senior football match for the first time in 20 years on 30 March.

The Super Eagles will take on Lesotho in their final 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Teslim Balogun stadium.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials say that the number of fans allowed in to the stadium to watch the match depends on the Confederation of African Football’s Covid-19 protocols at the time.

The last competitive game Nigeria played in Lagos was a 1-0 Nations Cup qualifying win over Zambia in January 2001, while 10 years later there was a 2-1 friendly win over Sierra Leone at the Teslim Balogun venue.

March’s game could see Lagos once again becoming a permanent home for the Super Eagles according to sports minister Sunday Dare who is keen to refurbish the dilapidated National Stadium in Lagos.

“This city is excited to host the country’s first competitive fixture in 20 years in a place where the team rarely lose,” chairman of the Lagos State Sports commission, Sola Aiyepeku, told BBC Sport Africa

“Everything is geared towards making Lagos the home base again, because there’s a presence that this place has and demand that the fans have towards the opposition that puts them in fear.
“We want the Nigeria fear factor that this city has to return and put that in the hearts and souls of teams that come here.”

The city is also confident that it can put in all the necessary measures for the game despite the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s an unprecedented time to host the national team but wherever you go there is still the coronavirus, so it will definitely dampen probably the number of people,” NFF vice president and Lagos FA boss Seyi Akinwunmi added.

“Despite the huge logistic problems that comes with these challenging times, Lagos state has proven that it can manage the pandemic more than most states in the country.
“The state has all the capacity, the hotels, state of the art ambulances, hospitals and everything which is an added reason for the country to come to Lagos.

“It’s been a challenging year for the world in terms of football, but the country’s most famous state is delighted to welcome the Eagles back home where they’ve enjoyed a remarkable success.”

The Super Eagles have been playing their internationals around the country since the end of the 20th century when the cash-strapped Nigerian Football Association (now NFF) decided to approach cities interested in hosting international games.
Financial support, usually provided by the governors who host the national team in their states, saw the Eagles move around to Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Delta State.

The Abuja and Lagos National Stadiums, as well as dozens of others that dot Nigerian cities, have become white elephants furthering emphasising a sad reminder of Nigeria’s poor maintenance culture.

Gernot Rohr Speaks on Ahmed Musa, says Nigeria’s Must Win AFCON Qualifiers

German born tactician, Gernot Rohr has stated that he’ll like to see Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa start playing for a new club after more than three months of inactivity.

Rohr, the Super Eagles coach says he wants Ahmed Musa to be back ahead of their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March.

Nigeria will face the Republic of Benin and Lesotho in their last Afcon qualifying games next month.

Musa has been clubless since October when he left Saudi Arabian side, Al Nass, by mutual agreement and has had failed talks with West Brom of England.

Rohr says he is hopeful Musa will sort out his career soon.

“We are in touch with our captain, he is in the United Kingdom now,” Rohr told media.

“It’s not so easy to change during the season but he is free to sign where he wants and there’s no obligation to respect the transfer window for him because he was free already.”I am very hopeful that he can sign in the next few days, he wanted to come back to Europe and to play in England so it’s not easy during the season but I’m hopeful that he can sign in the club, it’s very important that everybody is playing in their clubs.

“It’s a long time that he didn’t play, I think since October, so he needs now to come back in the rhythm of the matches.”  “I hope to see the fans very soon in the stadium, it’s difficult for the fans, we have the pandemic situation for almost one year,” he added.

“I want to tell them that our boys will fight to forget some disappointment from last year.”

EPL: Key Battles in Liverpool, Man United Top-of-table Clash

When Liverpool and Manchester United clash at Anfield on Sunday, there will be more at stake than just the usual bragging rights.

The bitter rivals are engaged in a battle for the Premier League title, with leaders United sitting three points clear of second-placed Liverpool.

Here is a closer look at three duels – from goals and crosses, to set-pieces, penalty banter, injuries, pressing, high lines, running, possession, scoring late, and conceding early – that will define the vital showdown:

Jordan Henderson vs Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has played a major role in transforming Manchester United from also-rans to title contenders.

Widely credited with reviving United with his fierce will to win and positive attitude, as well as his classy performances, the Portugal playmaker’s next mission is to stamp his authority on the biggest game of his time with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Fernandes, signed from Sporting Lisbon last January, will head to Anfield as the first star to win the Premier League Player of the Month award four times in a calendar year after earning the prize for December.

Overall, he has 15 goals and nine assists in all competitions this term, making it 27 goals and 17 assists in 48 United appearances.

No wonder Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer and will task Reds captain Jordan Henderson with subduing the midfielder on Sunday.

“He’s an outstanding player. Before he joined United, we played against Sporting in the USA on the tour and in that game already you could see, ‘Wow!’,” Klopp said.

“He is settled, he is a very influential player for United obviously, involved in a lot of things. So, yeah, a good signing, unfortunately, for United.”

Mohamed Salah vs Eric Bailly

With 17 goals in all competitions this season, Mohamed Salah will pose the biggest threat to United, but the Egypt forward can expect a stern challenge from the revitalised Eric Bailly.

Bailly has struggled for form and fitness throughout his United career, but the Ivory Coast centre-back has been key to their winning streak.

In six games with Bailly in the team, United have won five and drawn once, conceding just three goals.

Harry Maguire looks more comfortable alongside Bailly, whose out-going personality kept his team-mates relaxed during their difficult periods earlier this season.

United manager Solskjaer could also revert to the three-man central defence he has deployed against Liverpool in the past.

Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are a formidable test for United’s rearguard, although they have gone through a barren patch of late, with Liverpool netting only once in their last three league games.

Fabinho vs Marcus Rashford

Ravaged by injuries to his top centre-backs, Klopp will be forced to deploy Brazil midfielder Fabinho as a makeshift defender once again.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term absentees, while Joel Matip has spent the last week battling to return from the adductor injury the last three games.

Matip has returned to training but if he is not deemed ready then Klopp will have to choose between youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips to partner Fabinho.

That puts the onus on Fabinho to maintain his solid form at the position, but it won’t be easy against a lively United attack led by Marcus Rashford.

Rashford and Anthony Martial have the pace and poise to hurt Liverpool, while Edinson Cavani’s experience and physical presence make him an intriguing option.

“We know that we can beat anyone, anywhere on any given day, so to go into a game like this feeling that if we play to our best we can win is a good feeling,” Solskjaer said.

“It’s a test and reality check of where we’re really at because we’ve won many, many tight games, scored a few goals in injury time, showed that mentality.”

Styles of play

Goals, shots and through balls – The general narrative appears to suggest United are fortunate to go into this fixture at the summit, or even close to it, but they certainly deserve to be among the higher rungs – ranking second for goals scored and shots on target, behind only Liverpool.
Both sides are also among the most prolific for threading balls between defensive lines, so expect intricate passes or exchanges with runners and breakaway attacks this weekend.
As has been the case for several seasons, Liverpool’s top scorers are Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, while midfield maestro Bruno Fernandes and winger Marcus Rashford lead the way at United this term.

Man Utd score late, both concede early – Rashford’s late winner at Wolves was just the latest example of United striking in the final moments of games this season. They also scored stoppage-time goals to grab points against Southampton and Brighton. The graphic below also shows how they have scored 21 of their 34 goals in the second half, equating to 62 per cent.

That is not the case for Liverpool, who have scored in equal measure during both halves. However, both teams have been prone to conceding early this season.

Klopp’s side have conceded 14 of their 21 goals in the first half – although the majority of these came during the opening eight fixtures and they still managed to secure wins in most of those games.

Dortmund Consides Sancho Sale, Napoli Want £100m For Koulibaly

Borussia Dortmund are putting a Jadon Sancho contingency plan in place amid fears of a Manchester United transfer, Daily Star reports.

Sancho was linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer transfer window, and he has experienced an indifferent season in the Bundesliga since the speculation.

France Football claim Dortmund are now preparing for his sale as they look to end Bayern Munich’s domestic dominance.

Stuttgart forward Tanguy Coulibaly has been identified as a “replacement” for the England international.

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has warned Manchester United and Liverpool they must offer at least £100m if they want to sign Kalidou Koulibaly this month, The Sun reports.

Liverpool are desperate for centre-back reinforcements after Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez suffered long-term injuries, and their interest in the 29-year-old Senegal defender has been known for some time.

Koulibaly, whose contract expires in summer 2023, has played in 18 games for Napoli this season, helping keep seven clean sheets.

De Laurentiis spoke to Jim White, and the Sky Sports News’ presenter relayed his conversation on talkSPORT.

“This morning, I spoke to Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Napoli owner, and said what about your player, are there bids in for him? He laughed it off saying he’s not for sale.

“It seems on this occasion Koulibaly is going nowhere. He stays and that was as recent as this morning. Anyone going in with anything other than £100million for Koulibaly can forget it.

“He’s absolutely not for sale unless one of the big clubs in England come up with £100million.”

I Used to Save My Lunch Money and Borrow Just to Watch Manchester United Play - Odion Ighalo Reveals

Manchester United and Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo has spoken of how his love for the Red Devils began.

With just a month left for his contract to expire at Manchester United, Odion Ighalo has spoken to the club’s website, reminiscing how he used to save part of his lunch money many years ago to watch Manchester United’s games at viewing centres in his hometown of Nigeria.

Ighalo, 31-year-old joined Manchester United on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January 2020, a deal which will see him stay at the club until the end of January 2021.

Born in Ajegunle, Lagos to a poor Edo family, the striker has described how he managed to watch Manchester United’s weekend games back then.

“I grew up in an area where everyone watched Premier League football. You either supported Manchester United or Arsenal or Chelsea back then,” Ighalo told the club website.

“In my house, my brothers, my late sister, they supported Manchester United. I was very young and I didn’t know a lot about football, so when they went to watch the game they would come back and you would see they would be arguing.

“When I grew up, my brother started taking me to the viewing centre to watch Manchester United. That’s how I fell in love with the team, watching Manchester United playing week in, week out“It’s a very small place, you would have maybe 100 people, it was very tight and that. “But they don’t care, they just want to watch the football.

“You see people who will pull a stool and stand at the back. On a small chair like this. They don’t care about the inconvenience, they just want to watch their team playing and doing well.”

Ighalo, who has played just nine minutes of Premier League football this season, said he cried when the Red Devils lost games after spending his lunch money to watch them.

He continued: “I had to save money. Before you go to school, my mum would leave me some money if I wanted to eat lunch. From Monday I was saving my money because I wanted to watch Manchester United.

“I split it in two. Even though I would use part of the money for lunch, I would save some of the money because the weekend is coming. Sometimes you would be feeling hungry because you don’t eat properly, but you don’t want to miss the game at the weekend.

“You don’t want someone to tell you how Manchester United played, how they scored. You want to see it yourself. It’s that passion. You start saving money until the weekend.

“After Friday when school is done, you see everyone get happy. They get their Manchester United shirt, their Arsenal shirt; you wash it and dry it. Everyone’s getting set for the weekend. It’s like a celebration, like you’re at a party.

“If Manchester United are playing on a Saturday, you have to pull on your Manchester United shirt and go to the viewing centre looking smart. When the game started, sometimes it would be so hot because there was no air conditioning, then you have to take off your shirt and you’re fanning yourself.

“Then after the viewing centre, at the end of the game we’re arguing about the match from the viewing centre to our home. Sometimes I cry if Manchester United lose a game. You cry because you come home and see people arguing and saying bad things to you. Sometimes I shed tears because you don’t want your team to lose. That’s how crazy it was back then.”.

Man United 1-0 Wolves: Rashford to The Rescue as United End 2020 in Second Spot

Manchester United go into the new year in second place in the Premier League thanks to a sensational late win against Wolves from a Marcus Rashford strike on Tuesday night, December 29.

Ole Gunner Solkajaer made six changes from the Reds’ XI that started the 2-2 draw at Leicester City, four days ago.

It had been a frustrating night for the Reds but the club’s never-say-die attitude helped change the outcome of the match in added-time.

Wolves made four changes from the team that started their last match and tested David De Gea who made three saves from Pedro Neto, Vitinha and Ruben Neves inside the first 15 minutes.

In the 34th minute, Mason Greenwood created the best chance of the half as he lofted a delivery to the far post. Bruno Fernandes connected with the cross but Wolves keeper Rui Patricio saved from point-blank range.

It was De Gea who was back in action next when Saiss flicked on a 39th-minute free-kick from Neto but De Gea came in useful again.

Seeing that his squad needed more depth going forward, Solkajaer made a halftime change bringing in Luke Shaw for Alex Telles.

United struggled to create any danger to the visitors in the opening minutes of the second half and, after 64 minutes, the manager decided to substituteMason Greenwood for Anthony Martial.

After 69 minutes, Edinson Cavani put the ball in the net but was ruled offside immediately and the assistant-referee’s decision was confirmed by VAR.

Paul Pogba managed to get a shot off after 75 minutes but it was saved well by keeper Patricio and Martial followed up with a chance from distance but it flew high.

As the fourth-official signalled five added minutes, Rashford found himself in the box after a wonderful cross from talisman Bruno Fernandes and his shot took a deflection off defender Saiss.

The goal earned United their last win of the year which shoots them to second on the table, just two points below table toppers Liverpool.

Arsenal Offer Ozil To Juventus On Loan For Chance To Reunite Him With Ronaldo

Juventus have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil on a six-month loan deal.

Italian outlet Tuttosport claim Juve have had contact with the German’s entourage and Arsenal are prepared to let him leave for free.

The German could be tempted by a chance to reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo

The report adds that the Gunners are also willing to pay a portion of Ozil’s mammoth £350,000-a-week salary to facilitate a move.

A switch to Juventus would allow the playmaker to reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo with the pair forming a formidable partnership at Real Madrid.

The Portuguese was memorably angry about Ozil’s 2013 move to England while the latter has hailed CR7 as one of the best of all time.

He told Arsenal’s official website back in 2018:
“Another thing people always ask me about is what it was like to play with Cristiano Ronaldo and all I can say is that I’ve never seen a person like him.
I really enjoyed playing with him because he made me better on the pitch and he’s a great guy off it, too. I gave him loads of assists and he doesn’t need me to remind him of that!
It was easy to play with him because you didn’t need to create a lot of chances. Even if I just gave him two passes, he would score two goals and that’s why he’s one of the greatest footballers who’s ever lived.”
Ozil has not played football since March and was axed from both of Arsenal’s 25-man squads for the top flight and Europa League.

In his absence, Arsenal have won just once in their last eight Premier League matches and have slid to 15th in the table.

But according to his agent, Ozil’s agent insisted he will stay for the remaining six months of his contract.

Mikel Arteta has since opened the door to that possibility as he has the option to re-register the 32-year-old in January.

And SunSport revealed that senior Arsenal stars are reportedly hoping to see Ozil recalled to the team next month.

I Thought EndSARS Protests Was Against A Virus - Anthony Joshua Says

International Boxer Anthony Joshua said he thought the #EndSARs protests which rocked Nigeria in October was a fight against a virus Severe acute respiratory syndrome which also has the SARS acronym.

In an exclusive interview with Punch correspondent, Joshua said because he had never been a victim of police brutality while in Nigeria, he had never heard of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Joshua joined global stars in supporting the #EndSARS movement after Nigerians had gone to the streets to protest against the activities of SARS whose officers were accused of extrajudicial killings, unlawful detentions, torture, extortion and various forms of abuses.

The boxer said it was after his uncle called his attention to the protests in Nigeria that he had to read more about SARS and Nigeria’s history.

“I never knew what SARS was during my time in Nigeria; I never encountered SARS, so, when the movement started happening, I thought SARS was maybe like a virus, I didn’t know SARS. One day after training, my uncle called me and this was just before the issue of the Lekki toll gate, about five hours before it, he called me and told me about the situation on the ground. He told me the people of Nigeria loved me and wanted to hear my voice on it,”

“I told him I didn’t know enough about it to talk about it and he said I should just lend my voice and bring awareness. So, I said if it’s what I can do for now, let me just lend my voice and bring my attention to it because I have a big platform. So, I just said it’s important to find a common ground because you can’t overthrow the government in a minute, but we need to find a common solution that will benefit the people.

“So I thought it was important for me to send out a positive message and shortly after that, about four hours later, people had been murdered at the toll gate. So, I said this wasn’t only about finding a common ground, this had to stop. But I didn’t want to go back on my message, I had sent a message out and I had done a lot more research about the #EndSARS movement.

Amokachi Lambasts NFF Over $2 Million Compensation Clause In Rohr’s Contract

Former Super Eagles attacker, Daniel Amokachi, has blasted the Nigeria Football Federation for the new contract it gave to Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr which has a $2 million compensation clause.

Rohr was appointed as coach of the Super Eagles in 2016 following Sunday Oliseh’s resignation as manager of the national team.

According to Oliseh he left the post due to the failure of the federation to support him and also over his unpaid wages and contract violation.

Rohr upon taking over in 2016 guided the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia but failed to progress past the group stage.

Rohr who finished third at the 2019 Afcon in Egypt and was handed a new deal after the federation reviewed his job and expressed satisfaction with him.

Nigeria recently failed to beat lowly-rated side Sierra Leone in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers putting much criticism on the Franco-German tactician.

Special assistant on sports to Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari, Daniel Amokachi, has now come out to reveal Rohr’s contract contains a huge $2 million compensation clause, which in his view is a terrible choice considering how the football body treated indigenous coaches like Sunday Olisey and Emmanuel Amuneke.

“For the administration to bring somebody like Oliseh and not giving him time because he’s Nigerian and they let go,” Amokachi told Brila FM.

“To bring in somebody like Amuneke and not giving him time then they let him go. Then you bring a new coach where those two coaches are far better than him; pedigree-wise and portfolio-wise.

“But still, they gave the machinery a lot of money, $60 plus with all the bonuses, if they play two matches in a month, then you’re talking over $100,000.

“And then at the end of the day, you put a $2m clause on a coach that has never won anything. A coach that came from Burkina Faso to Tunisia then to Nigeria and you put a $2m clause, that’s the first I’m hearing such.

“If you were bringing Guardiola you can put $10m if he says he wants it because you know who he is; he has won laurels. But for a coach that has not done anything, not achieved anything and you put a $2m clause? There’s a lot of failure in that.

“I’ll not rate them (NFF) out of 10, but all these things I’ve broken down will tell anybody with common sense where I’m coming from.”
