See Photos: DSS Brutally Tortured Pastor Till He Goes Blind In Lagos

The pastor in charge of Gracious and Mercy Prophetic International Church, Egbeda, Lagos State, Pastor Ejimozor Williams, has lost his sight due to a torture he allegedly suffered in the hands of some operatives of the Department of State Services in Lagos.

It was learnt that the 46-year-old pastor’s house in the Ayobo area of the state had been invaded by the security officials after his houseboy, identified simply as Chukwujekwu, defrauded some residents using fake dollars.

When the officials failed to arrest the suspect, who had fled, they ransacked Pastor Ejimozor’s home and found some of the counterfeit currency.

According to Punch, he was allegedly bundled into a DSS operational van, where he was subjected to different forms of torture.

When he sought to know the identities of the men, one of the officials allegedly hit his head with the butt of a gun.

A few weeks later, he was said to have become blind. Despite visiting no fewer than eight hospitals, the Rivers State indigene had yet to regain his sight.

Pastor Ejimozor said he formerly owned a hotel and a house in Abuja, which were demolished by the Federal Government, adding that he later relocated to Lagos to start a new life.

He said, “I started working as a freight worker at the Apapa port where I met the houseboy. Someone actually introduced Chukwujekwu to me and I decided to help the boy.

“After some time, he told me that he wanted to travel and that I should borrow him some money. I told him I didn’t have any money, so he went to meet a man called Okoye, an old friend of mine. Okoye gave him some fake dollars".

He added that Chukwujekwu showed the dollars to a barber in the area, saying his relative abroad sent him the money and could also help the barber secure a visa to travel overseas.

The barber allegedly parted with N30,000 for the visa and handed the suspect his passport.

Chukwujekwu reportedly fled the house after defrauding several other residents on the street.

“On May 9, 2014, I was at home when about six persons scaled the fence into my compound. They wore black shirts and were armed.

“They came into the house with Okoye and three other gunmen. They began to search the house and beat up people in the compound.

“During the search, they found the fake dollars Chukwujekwu used to defraud people in the area. They said I should sign a statement, but I refused. They beat me up,” he added.

He explained that he was put in a DSS vehicle and taken away.

He said when he asked what he did wrong, one of the gunmen hit him with the butt of a gun in the head, threatening to kill him.

Pastor Ejimozor said a part of his skull was compressed after the assault, adding that he was later driven to the DSS office on CMD Road, Magodo, Ketu-Ikosi.

He said, “It was when we arrived at their head office that I realised they were DSS officials. They chained my hands and feet.

The next day, they informed me that Okoye told them that we both used fake dollars to defraud people. I denied the claim.
“I was held incommunicado for three weeks and was constantly tortured.

“The DSS later said before they would release me, I must pay N15m which I didn’t have. I told them that all I had was N20,000. After another round of torture, I fainted and was rushed to a clinic where they told them that my blood pressure was low".

He added that he was immediately transferred to the State Criminal investigation and Intelligence Department of the Lagos State Police Command.

After spending two weeks at the SCIID, he was arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court.

He was reportedly remanded in the Ikoyi Prison pending when he would fulfil his bail conditions.

However, while in the prison, the victim said he had a migraine and was rushed to a hospital.

“This led to a partial stroke. I was at home some weeks later when everywhere suddenly went blank. I couldn’t see anything again and that was how I went blind.

Now, I cannot do anything for myself and my family. I am frustrated. I also have diabetes and high blood pressure,” he added.

His wife, Mrs. Chinyere Williams, said they visited more than eight hospitals together without any result, adding that her husband was later asked to go for a CT scan.

She said the scan revealed that he could not see because his brain had been affected after he was hit with the butt of a gun.

“We have been married for 18 years and seeing him like this is like hell. Since he came out from the DSS cell, it has been one sickness after another. I had to carry him on my back several times from the house to hospitals,” she added.

Chinyere said the case against her husband at the magistrate court was struck out because after the first arraignment, neither the DSS nor the police showed up in court.

She called for the punishment of the DSS officials and appealed that her husband be flown abroad for a brain surgery that would correct the problem.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, described the attack as a breach of the rights of the victim , saying the DSS must end the practice of torture.

He said, “The family has given us a firm instruction to pursue the matter legally.
Beyond asking for exemplary damages for him, we also intend to use his case to stop the practise of subjecting innocent members of the public to torture".

The Lagos DSS could not be reached for comment as of the time of filing this report.

Finally, Federal Government Released The Economic Recovery and Growth Plan

After months of consultation with stakeholders from private and public sectors, the Government on Tuesday finally released the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, which raised the Value Added Tax rate on luxury items from the current 5 percent to 15 percent.

What this means is that rich people will pay more for certain goods and services.

Through the increase in VAT rate on luxury items, which the document stated would commence in 2018, as well as improvement in Companies Income Tax, a total of N350bn is being projected to be generated annually.

The administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan had in 2014, while unveiling its austerity measures, identified some items that were to be taxed as luxury goods to include champagne, alcoholic beverages, private jets, luxury cars based on engine capacity, and yachts.

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led government said it would increase non-oil tax revenues by improving tax compliance and broadening the tax net by employing appropriate technology and tightening the tax code, as well as introducing tax on luxury items and other indirect taxes to capture a greater share of the non-formal economy.

It also announced plans to undertake major reforms in the budgeting for state-owned enterprises, which would include legislative amendments of the laws establishing many of the SOEs.

According to the document, FG is targeting real Gross Domestic Product of N81.38tn by 2020.

The document, the content of which is expected to take the country out of recession, was released by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and contains the economic blueprint of the government for the three-year period, 2017 to 2020.

It read in part, “Continued dependence on crude oil exports as a primary source of foreign exchange earnings makes the Nigerian economy vulnerable to domestic and external shocks from the oil and gas sector.

“Indeed, although the oil and gas sector represents about 10 per cent of the total GDP, it still accounts for 94 per cent of export earnings and 62 per cent of government revenues. Diversification of the economy must therefore extend to finding other sources of revenue and foreign exchange earnings.

“Policy objectives (are) to improve overall Federal Government revenues by increasing revenues from oil production and targeting non-oil revenue sources. Increase the tax base by raising the VAT rate for luxury items from five to 15 per cent from 2018, while improving CIT and VAT compliance to raise N350bn annually.”

The plan envisages that by 2020, Nigeria would have made significant progress towards achieving structural economic change with a more diversified and inclusive economy.

Overall, the plan is expected to deliver on five key broad outcomes, which are a stable macroeconomic environment; agricultural transformation and food security;

sufficiency in energy (power and petroleum products); improved transportation infrastructure; and industrialisation focusing on small and medium-scale enterprises.

Ghanaian President, Akufo-Addo Has Sacked 23,000 Ghanaian Workers Within His First 2 Months In Office

After promising to create jobs for the unemployed during his campaign last year, it has now emerged that President Akufo-Addo and his government has instead sacked 23,000 Ghanaian workers in its first two months in office.

This was revealed by NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during a debate in Parliament on President Akufo-Addo’s maiden State of the Nation Address.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo government in February this year sacked 205 workers at the National Service Scheme who were employed in December 2016 by the Mahama administration with the excuse that their recruitments did not follow due process.

It was noted that Government also dismissed 525 officials at the National Security alleging they were members of NDC, and 206 police recruits for allegedly using forged certificates.

This exercise was extended to the health sector where government canceled clearance given last year by the Mahama administration for the recruitment of 8600 nurses by the Ghana Health Service.

According to Ghana Web, the unprecedented job loss was as a result of the Akufo-Addo government’s vow to cancel all appointments and clearance for employment by the erstwhile Mahama administration described as 'last minute'.

4 Oil Thieves Been Sentenced To 120Yrs Imprisonment (See Photos)

Justice Agatha A. Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State have convicted and sentenced four suspected members of an oil syndicate Olusegun Gbenga, Yusuf Muhammed, Abass Auwal and Olanipekun Olagoke to 10years imprisonment on each of the 12-count charge of oil theft preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. One of the counts reads:

“That you, Olusegun Gbenga, Yusuf Muhammed, Abass Auwal and Olanipekun Olagoke on the 12th day of May, 2014 at Toto Military check point in Nasarawa State, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, did without lawful authority or an appropriate licence, deal in crude oil and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 1 (17) (a) (b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, CAP M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004”.

The convicts, on arraignment pleaded not guilty, but upon diligent prosecution by the EFCC, they were found guilty and sentenced. Prosecution counsel, Salisu Majidadi, citing Section 1 (17) (a) (b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, CAP M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, drew the attention of the court to the fact that:

“The vehicle that was used in conveying the crude oil should automatically be forfeited to the Federal Government.”

In view of this argument, Justice Okeke, who had earlier wanted the EFCC to formally apply to the court for the forfeiture of the products, thereafter, ordered the EFCC to evacuate the crude oil and return same to the NNPC, while the truck be forfeited to the Federal Government. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The tide turned, though, after Laurent Koscielny saw red for bringing down Robert Lewandowski inside the box early in the second half.

Suspected Kidnappers Kidnaped Business Woman In Ibadan and Take Her Into Forest

Three Fulani men were among five other suspects paraded by the Oyo State Police command for allegedly kidnapping a 52-year old business woman in Ibadan.

While parading the suspects, the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Abiodun Odude, gave the names of the suspected kidnappers as Taoreed Ibrahim, 35; Wilfred Manger,32; Moshood Adams, 26; Umar Amadu, 31; and gang leader, Adekunle Folorunsho Aderopo, 31.

The CP said, “In the few days that we have been here, we have been able to record very formidable achievements. The first achievement we have been able to make was the case of a woman, who was kidnapped.

"Her car with other documents were taken away by the kidnappers. We have arrested five of the kidnappers and we are still working and very soon, we will get the remaining members of the gang, who had the rifles and other weapons that were used in that operation. It is a welcome feat for us".

He added that two of the suspects, Aderopo and Wilfred Manger were ex-convicts.

He said Folorunso Aderopo, 31, was released from Agodi prison in August last year after serving a jail-term, while Wilfred Manger, 32, was also released from the same prison.

“The suspects trailed their victim from her office in Ojoo area of Ibadan to her house in Akobo and kidnapped her around 10pm as she was about to enter her house on February 25, 2017. She was robbed of her valuables before being driven away in her Toyota Highlander with number plate LND 954 EE. All through the journey, she was blindfolded to prevent her from knowing where they were until they entered a forest.

“She was taken to Ogere forest where she was subjected to all manner of emotional and psychological torture. She was kept in the forest for two days and prevented from contacting her family. But through diligent investigation in collaboration with Lagos State Police Command, some suspects were arrested at Alausa in Ikeja, Lagos with the victim’s car on February 28, 2017".

While speaking with newsmen, the suspected mastermind of the kidnap, Aderopo, said he got information from a member of the gang, Moshood Adams. The suspect said, “we traced her from Ojoo in Ibadan to her residence in Akobo where we dispossessed her of her valuables, including a cash sum of N100,000. So, we took her to a bush in Ogere. I was arrested in Lagos with the Toyota Highlander of the woman.”
Naratting her experience, the abducted woman said,

“We were coming from office at night on Saturday. Then, the gate of our house was opened. The next thing I heard was everybody should lie down. So, we all lied down. They collected all the valuables and they put me in the car, which, of course, I did not know it has tracker.

“We moved for about 25 minutes and I was put somewhere. I was blindfolded till around 4a.m. In the morning, I was moved into the bush and we trekked from Saturday night till Monday afternoon. I was not given any food during the time".
