Policy of Controversial Motor Duty For Customs Service Of Nigeria Been Suspended

Following the faceoff with the senate and the public outcry, the Nigeria Customs Service NCS, has announced the suspension of its controversial new motor duty policy.

The policy which was to take effect next month, proposed that vehicle owners should visit the nearest Customs office to ascertain if their vehicle duties were fully paid for or not by their vehicle importer. If not paid for, they are to pay for it or have their vehicles impounded...

This has generated a lot of controversy, resulting in the Senate mandating the Comptroller General of NCS, Hameed Ali, to appear before it today dressed in his unifotm. The Customs boss in a letter to the Senate, said he would not appear before the house as he has an urgent meeting. Hameed however met with Saraki at the National Assembly yesterday evening and it was resolved that the policy should be suspended.

Read a statement released by NCS announcing the suspension, below..

"Following the unnecessary tension generated as a result of misconception and misrepresentation of the Nigeria Customs Service planned motor duty payment, the leadership of the National Assembly and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) met with a view to resolving the impasse. They both agreed that the proposed motor duty payment, though in line with the provision of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap C.45, LFN 2004 should be put on hold while the Senate Committee on Customs & Excise interfaces with the NCS for further discussions.

2. While payment of duty on vehicles or indeed any dutiable imported item remains a civic responsibility of every patriotic Nigerian, NCS Management has directed that the exercise be put on hold while expressing readiness to engage the Senate Committee on further discussions to bring them on board to understand the importance of the exercise to national security and economy".

Customs Boss, Kameed Ali Says He Won't Appear Before Court On Wednesday

A serious political drama is in the making. Colonel Hameed Ali is not a man who's looking for job. In fact it took time before he resumed after he was appointed by President Buhari. His own is to deliver, but Dino Melaye and some set of Senator want to prove that they can force him to wear uniform.

The appointed Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali, has told the Senate that he would not appear before the lawmakers on Wednesday as it coincided with the routine management of the NCS.

The Customs boss asked the upper chamber of the National Assembly fix another date for his appearance. Ali’ s letter was read to lawmakers at the plenary on Tuesday.

The letter was signed by an Assistant Comptroller General.

The Senators blasted Ali for relegating the Senate and for failing to personally sign the letter.

See Photos of a Kind Hearted 6yrs Old Little Girl Who Refused Getting Birthday Presents to Feed The Homeless

While other 6-year-olds start making demands for birthday presents days before their big day, a little girl did the unusual by voluntarily forfeiting her birthday presents so the homeless could have a meal.

Armani Crews told her parents she was going to forego a birthday present in exchange for feeding the homeless in her local park in Chicago.

Armani asked that the homeless should not be fed just anything, but should be given the same things she would have at a party.

At first, her parents thought she could not be serious. To make her understand the full import of her request, they told her that meant she would get no single present this year and she agreed. They finally agreed after she kept insisting for months.

To fulfil the child's request that the homeless be fed only the best, Armani's parents spent on chicken, fish, spaghetti, corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls, cake, cookies, fruit and water. In addition to what they prepared for the homeless, their local church also pitched in and donated items like toothbrushes, toothpastes, deodorant, hand sanitizer and a snack for each homeless person. A total of 125 people were fed in East Garfield Park.

Armani's mother, Artesha, said that her daughter was really excited that everyone was fed. The little girl, speaking of her unusual birthday request said; ‘it's nice to be nice’

This is The Full Details of Fresh Multi-Million Fraud Against Madam Diezani (See Photos)

An official of Fidelity Bank, Mr Timothy Olaobaju on Monday narrated how a former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, stashed a sum of $115,010,000 in the bank with instructions to convert it to naira and be distributed among individuals.

Among the beneficiaries, Olaobaju said, were a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,
Mr. Dele Belgore; and a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, who both received N450m in the run-up to the 2015 general elections.

Olaobaju said this on Monday when he appeared as a prosecution witness before Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Lagos, where Belgore and Sulaiman are being tried for alleged money laundering involving N450m.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charged Belgore and Sulaiman with five counts.

Charged along with the SAN and the ex-minister is Diezani, who is said to “still be at large.”

The EFCC had earlier arraigned Belgore and Sulaiman on February 8, 2017, but they were re-arraigned on Monday on an amended charge, where the name of Diezani appeared as one of the defendants.

Upon their re-arraignment on Monday, Belgore and Sulaiman pleaded not guilty to the five charges just as they had earlier done.

Trial commenced immediately after the defendants’ plea with the EFCC calling Olaobaju as its first witness.

Led in evidence by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness said, “Sometime in April 2014, our MD, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, gave a directive that certain companies and individuals would pay into an account with our bank some amounts of money. The purpose of the payment was not disclosed.

“Over the period, thereafter, some amounts were paid into the account. The funds were deposited in dollars. The total sum was $115,010,000.

“On March 27, 2015, there was an instruction from the former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, through our MD, that the funds in the account should be converted to naira and paid to certain individuals of which the list of beneficiaries was sent to our MD and the amount to be paid to them in naira.

“The funds were paid according to Alison-Madueke’s instructions.

“On the list sent to our branch, the names of the defendants (Belgore and Sulaiman) were on that list because the money was paid in about 36 states of the federation.

“The defendants are not customers of our bank.

“The instructions were that the sum of N450m should be paid to Mr. Dele Belgore (SAN) and Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman.

“They both received the money and they filled the Receipt of Payment as evidence of receipt of the money and acknowledgment of same.”

The witness said Belgore and Sulaiman signed separate Receipts of Payment for the same N450 on March 26, 2015.

The court admitted both Receipts of Payment in evidence and marked them as Exhibits 1 and 1A.

Asked by the prosecutor whether any cheque was issued in favour of Belgore and Sulaiman in respect of the fund, the witness answered in the negative.

Asked whether the N450m was credited into any account, the witness said, “To my knowledge, the N450m was not credited into any account.”

For the cross-examination of the witness, Belgore’s lawyer, Chief Ebun Shofunde (SAN), asked for an adjournment, stressing that most of what the witness said on Monday were not in the proof of evidence front-loaded and served on the defence counsel.

Sulaiman’s lawyer, Mr. Olatunji Ayanlaja (SAN), aligned himself with Shofunde.

The prosecutor said he would grudgingly concede to an adjournment till Tuesday in view of his respect for the defence counsel.

Justice Aikawa consequently adjourned the matter till Tuesday for further proceedings.

In the charges, Sulaiman, a professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Abuja, and Belgore, a former governorship aspirant in Kwara State, were accused of conspiring between themselves to commit the offence on March 27, 2015.

The duo were accused of making a cash transaction of N450m on March 27, 2015, without going through any financial institution. They also paid N50m to one Sheriff Shagaya.

The cash was above the lawful threshold permitted by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.
