[VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS] Roma 2 – 1 Lyon (Europa League)

Despite suffering defeat at Stadio Olimpico, Lyon overcame Roma on aggregate to progress to the Europa League quarter-finals.

Anthony Lopes put in a stellar performance as Lyon claimed a dramatic 5-4 aggregate victory over Roma to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

Lyon’s goalkeeper pulled off a string of spectacular saves throughout a tremendous contest at Stadio Olimpico as the Ligue 1 team progressed despite losing 2-1 on the night.

In a game which matched the first leg of this classic European tie for its remarkable intensity, Roma hit the woodwork through Antonio Rudiger in an action-packed opening before Mouctar Diakhaby put Bruno Genesio’s men ahead.

Roma immediately pulled level through Kevin Strootman’s fortunate finish, but Lopes was on hand to twice deny the midfielder a second as the half wore on.

Lucas Tousart’s own-goal on the hour-mark set-up an enthralling finish as Roma laid siege to Lyon’s goal – Stephan El Shaarawy going closest to what would have been a decisive strike, while Edin Dzeko had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside call.

Maxwel Cornet squandered two gilt-edged opportunities at the other end, but those misses mattered little in the end as, in spite of a late Roma onslaught, Lyon’s defence held firm to secure a famous win.

Roma were on top in a blistering opening to the second leg – Rudiger rattling the crossbar from close range before Lopes twice denied Mohamed Salah.

For all their dominance though, Roma found themselves behind after 16 minutes.

In a near carbon-copy of his goal from the first leg, Lyon youngster Diakhaby capitalised on poor Roma marking to head home powerfully from Mathieu Valbuena’s free-kick.

Lyon’s lead was cancelled out within a minute, however, as Strootman managed to bundle the ball over the line after connecting with a fantastic Daniele De Rossi delivery.

Football Legend, Ronaldinho Says Neymar Is Now On The Same Level With Ronaldo and Messi

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has surely stoked the fire amongst football pundits and lovers as he claimed countryman Neymar is on the same level with World footballer of the year Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Ronaldinho, one of Barca's greatest players of all time also claimed it'll be a matter of time before Neymar is crowned the world's best footballer.

Neymar was instrumental in Barcelona’s epic European comeback against Paris Saint German, scoring two important goals and assisting the winner which helped his side claw back a 4-0 first game deficit against the French giants in the champions league.

“Neymar is a close friend and he is Brazil’s greatest idol today,” Ronaldinho told Gulf News. “He’s already at the same level as Ronaldo and Messi and we truly hope that one day he can get the Ballon d’Or and continue his success, but he’s already amongst the top and it’s just a matter of time.”

When Ronaldinho was asked to compare the Barcelona of his time and the current Barcelona squad, he said ; "I never like comparisons, we were a great team with great players and individuals, and today's side also has a great team with great players and individuals," the 36-year-old added. See What Jose Mourinho Say To Defend Paul Pogba

With a world record price hanging over his head, Paul Pogba has come in for plenty of criticism from those who believe he is not doing enough to justify the £89million fee Manchester United shelled out for him. Jose Mourinho has risen to the defence of his star player saying his critics are envious and the 24yr old has achieved a lot all by himself.

The Portuguese coach said: 'I feel that the world is losing values and we all know that and envy is coming into certain levels that I am scared about especially for the next generation if things go in this direction.'

'It's not his fault that some of the pundits are in trouble with their lives and they need every coin to survive and Paul is a multi-millionaire. It's not his fault. 'He deserves respect, his family deserve respect. He is a kid who comes from a working family, a family with three boys that I'm sure needed a lot of food on that table every day because they are big giants. So I'm sure the mum and dad had to work hard for many years for them.

'A kid who came to Manchester as a teenager who fought for his career here, who wasn't afraid to move and go to another country and look for better conditions. 'A kid who reached the top of the world with his work. Nobody gave him anything. I'm really, really worried with the previous generations because things are going in such a direction that envy is everywhere.

'I'm very happy with Paul, the club is very happy with Paul. A good thing is that because of his personality he doesn't give an "S" to what people say.' Pogba has had a mixed campaign in his first season back at United, in 25 leagues appearances this season, he has 4 goals and 3 assists.

Senator Ali Ndume Says Saraki Should Not Be Senate President If Magu is Rejected Because of DSS Allegations

Senator Ali Ndume says if acting EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, can be rejected because of allegations made by DSS against him, then Bukola Saraki should not be the Senate President because he is currently in court answering to allegations of false declaration of Assets leveled against him by the Federal government.

Speaking on Channels TV today, Ndume said there is no justification for Magu's rejection by his colleagues. According to Ndume, himself, his colleagues and the senate president have been alleged to have committed different types of crime but yet they still remain in office. He argued that until such allegations are proven beyond doubts, Magu's rejection by the senate is faulty.

“We have all been accused, I have been accused of sponsoring Boko Haram, the senate president is still going court, same as other members who have cases in court, yet they occupy seats in the senate. So, if you say because of the allegations he (Magu) should not be confirmed, then I should not be a sitting senator and Saraki should not be there as senate president” he said

See Photos: How Muslim Cleric In Lagos State "Killed" a 3 Years Old Child Been Revealed

Emotions ran high at White Sands area of Isheri-Osun in Lagos yesterday, following a startling revelation by a teenager of how he lured a three-year-old child to a Muslim cleric, popularly called Alfa, who eventually killed him.

The 15yrs old suspect, a primary six pupil, stated that the cleric, Kazeem Alimson, paid him N500 to lure the child to a designated point, from where she was taken away to be killed.

Vanguard gathered that the victim’s mother, Chinasa Okereke, was bathing her children outside her compound on Akogun Street, Tuesday night, but went inside to get a wrapper with which to strap her youngest child on her back so she can attend to others. But apprehension set it when Okereke came out only to discover that her child was nowhere to be found.

The devastated mother who spoke with Vanguard during a visit to her house yesterday, “when I asked where he was, his sister said he went into one of our neighbour’s apartment. But on getting to the apartment, he was not there. I was informed that he went out with my neighbour’s nephew.

“But when he came back home, he said he did not know anything about my son’s whereabouts. He admitted to have seen him earlier, but said that he only saw him walking towards the opposite direction.”

A search around the vicinity was organised, but the boy was not found.

Policemen from the Isheri-Osun Division, who were contacted the next day (Wednesday) stormed the area and effected the teenager’s arrest, his guardians and other occupants of the building. During interrogation, he opened up, revealing how he took the missing child to Alfa Alimson, thereby leading to the latter’s arrest.

He then led policemen to an uncompleted building within the area, where the remains of the missing boy was found - gagged, with his limbs bound.

Explaining how the act was carried out, the teenager who hails from Abia State, said:

“This man (pointing to Alfa) told me to bring the boy. That night, he gave me N500 and was waiting for us.

“I took the child to him and he drove to the uncompleted building. When we got to the site, he covered the boy’s mouth with a red cloth, tied him up and started saying some Juju language (incarnations). Later, he hit the child’s head three times with a stone.

“He warned me not to tell anybody. He said if I do, he will kill me. He showed me a juju knife, with which he said he would butcher me if I revealed what happened to anybody.

“That was why I told everybody that I knew nothing about the boy’s disappearance when I came back home.”

However, Alfa Alimson denied knowing anything about the boy’s murder. He simply stated that he did not know what the teenager was talking about.

He said: “I was sleeping in my house yesterday, when I heard people shouting outside. When I came out, I saw some policemen around. I demanded to know why the policemen were there and was informed that a dead child was found in the uncompleted building.

“I went back inside. But 30 minutes later, police came back and arrested me. I don’t know this boy (the teenager) and I have never spoken to him.”

But at this point, the teenager interjected, saying “He is lying. He was giving me signs not to talk. I saw when he hit the boy with a stone on the head three times.”

Angry residents, who called for jungle justice, were prevented by the policemen from getting close to the suspects. The suspects were then driven to the station in one of the police vans, with some inquisitive residents following on motorbikes and on foot.
