Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari Absent At Aso Rock Mosque Today

A move that is set to increase speculations about his state of health, President Muhammadu Buhari did not show up for the Juma’at prayer at the Aso Rock mosque on Friday.

This is first time Mr president will be absent at the mosque since he returned to the country after a 49-day medical vacation in the UK.

However, some of the dignitaries who usually join him at the mosque were there for prayers.

Among them were Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, Ibikunle Amosun, his Ogun counterpart, and Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara.

The absence of the president in public functions has been a source of concern.

On Wednesday, Buhari missed the federal executive council meeting for the second time in a row, fuelling reports about his health condition.

Should Nigerians be worried about Mr President health? I guess time will tell.

"Why You Rarely See Me In Public" - President Muhammadu Buhari Opens Up

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that despite insinuations about his alleged poor health, there is no need for apprehension over recovery.

Mr. President spoke on Thursday evening through a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Explaining why he's been out of public glare for a while, he said;
“President Buhari’s absence at the Federal Executive Council meeting of Wednesday, April 26, was a last minute decision; otherwise, the cabinet and the public might have been alerted in advance. As eager as he is to be up and about, the President’s doctors have advised on his taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment in the United Kingdom some weeks ago.

“President Buhari himself, on his return to the country, made Nigerians aware of the state of his health while he was in London. Full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation, as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, intimated in his press briefing after the FEC meeting on Wednesday.

“Despite his lack of visibility, Nigerians should rest assured that President Buhari has not abdicated his role as Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria.

“He receives daily briefings on the activities of government, and confers regularly with his Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. His private residence, in which he has been spending the majority of his time recently, also has a fully equipped office.

“God is the giver of life and health. We are grateful that He has seen our President through the worst period of his convalescence in London. We are thankful that the President has passed a number of benchmarks already. We pray that God continues to see him through this period of recuperation.”

"I Did Not Snub Ooni of Ife at Public Function" - Oba of Lagos Says

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has denied snubbing the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi at a public function some days ago. A video made rounds on social media showing the Oba of Lagos acknowledging the greeting of the Ooni of Ife in an unfriendly manner

Many Nigerians reacted to the video, calling out the Oba for being "rude" to the Ooni who is believed to be the most superior monarch in Yoruba land.

Speaking through one of his white cap chiefs, Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose, the Lagos Monarch said he did not ignore the Ooni of Ife at the public function as being interpreted by many Nigerians. Lateef who spoke to newsmen at the palace of the Oba in Lagos, said the manner in which the Oba greeted the Ooni is the culturally acclaimed way of greeting by a monarch in Lagos and that the Oba of Lagos was only trying to revive that culture which according to him is going extinct.

“The sign by Oba Akiolu signifies, ‘inu mi, inu e’, the culture of greeting in Lagos. If Oba Akiolu wanted to ignore, he would have turned his face away from Ooni. There is no misunderstanding between both highly revered Monarchs in Yoruba Land. Oba Akiolu was well represented at the coronation of Ooni of Ife, which attested to the fact that he does not disregard the office of Ooni Adeyeye. There is no sentiment in the culture of Lagos. As we met it that is the way we are doing it. Kabiesi Oba Akiolu is trying to bring back the old pattern, the old culture we have left behind. What happened that day was wrongly speculated by the social media to disrupt peace and order and misinterpret Oba Akiolu’s action. We just want to appeal to the social media to stop spreading wrong information. They should try and understand the reason behind every action carried out most especially by traditional rulers. Yoruba has a very rich culture. There is no quarrel between the Oba of Lagos and Ooni of Ife” he said

Nigeria's Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar Says Things Are Getting Worse

Ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says Nigeria is at a crossroads and things are made worse by the “cocktail of economic, social, political and problems” which we have had to contend with.

Speaking in Abuja during the public presentation of the Daily Stream newspaper, Abubakar said unity, diversity and national development were among Nigeria’s greatest challenges.

“Unity, diversity and national development are among Nigeria’s greatest challenges. Unity has been a scarce commodity among our country’s diverse peoples and communities, as a consequence of the way and manner the country was put together by British colonial authorities and our collective failure as a people to create a true and viable nation out of the union.”

“This has become a major source of disquiet, anxiety and frustration and a veritable obstacle to national development.

“Disagreements and controversies over the best political structure to be adopted, size and responsibility of government, the nature of relationship between and among component units, the type and system of government, as well as how resources available in and accruing to the country should be allocated have continued unabated.

“Those controversies have sometimes threatened the very existence of the country. A huge pall of pessimism hangs over a section of the citizenry, and the ranks of those who harbour real doubt about the future of the country swell by the day.

“The country is truly at a crossroads, and things are made worse by the cocktail of economic, social, political and problems which we have had to contend with, and which add to the abysmally low estimation of our country even by its own citizens,” he said.

Atiku said despite the challenges, he still has a strong belief in Nigeria.

“However, I am not here just to lament over the sad and unenviable state of affairs in Nigeria. I firmly believe in the viability of the Nigerian project, I remain unshaken and completely persuaded that we can eventually change the story of Nigeria for good by collectively making Nigeria a productive, prosperous, peaceful and united nation whose people are happy and contented and one that is able to really lead Africa and assume a pride of place in the comity of nations,” he said.

“But to achieve that, we must elevate and steer conversation away from empty rhetoric and platitudes. We must instigate and see to the full and faithful implementation of profound changes in the political structure, organisation, functions and performance of state, and a radical re-organization of government, its organs and personnel.”

Photos: Married Lady Incurs N757,000 Debt At A Bar In Lagos State

A bar operator on Lekki Beach Road, Ademola Ogunbona, says he has lost his livelihood to the alleged debt of N757,750 incurred by one Mrs. Shaw, aka Mama G.

The said woman had gone to the bar around 6am on August 15, 2016, to have fun, which lasted till about 1am the following day.

It was said that Mama G instructed the barman to serve customers that came to the bar throughout her stay, and promised to pick up the bill for their drinks.

One of the major beneficiaries of Mama G’s 'kind' gesture was a man who came to the bar with his friends at about 6.30pm to celebrate his birthday.

She allegedly ordered many rounds of drinks for the man and his friends and told Ogunbona to add their bill to hers.

However, at about 1am, when she had reportedly become inebriated, some persons were said to have stormed the bar and took her away in a Honda car to Rotary Garden Estate, Ilasan, Ajah, where she lives with her husband.

In a chat with Punch, Ogunbona said he, two of his workers and the chief security officer of shops in the area followed the car, but the security guards at the estate gate did not allow them in.

He said, “Mama G came to my bar at about 6am on August 15, 2016, and ordered drinks. She told me to serve everybody that came to the bar and promised to pay. In the afternoon, I told her that her bill was over N200,000. She slapped my face and asked me whether she looked like a debtor.

“She said I should serve very expensive drinks to whoever came to the bar. She even called some beggars who were passing by into the bar to drink. Around 6.30pm, a man came into the bar to mark his birthday along with his friends, numbering about 16, including ladies. She told them not to pay.

“They took five bottles of Remy Martin, seven bottles of Absolute Vodka and three bottles of Sky. They also smoke cigarettes. They left around 10pm. At about 1am, four men and a woman came to pick the woman. I insisted that I would collect my money, but they took her away.

“They dropped her off at the estate gate and left. She banged the gate repeatedly. Eventually, her housemaids came to pick her. I was not allowed to enter into the estate with her.”

The father of two children explained that he went to report the case at the Ajiwe Police Division and submitted the bill to the police. He said the police invited the woman, but her husband sent a message to them that she had gone to Ghana.

“He told the police that Mama G would come back in December 2016. The police sent another letter to the man in December. On January 11, he transferred N200,000 into my bank account.

“I called him and asked for the remaining money, he said I should contact his wife’s lawyer. When I called the lawyer, he said I should manage the money (N200k) like that. I reported back to the station and they invited his wife again. Neither the woman nor her husband showed up. Their cook and driver were arrested. The lawyer secured their bail on the same day.

“Since the case was transferred to the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, in February 2017, the Investigating Police Officer in charge of the case has been telling me to be patient; but I have children and a wife to cater to,” he added.

The husband, Mr. Shaw, terminated a call put across to him immediately the correspondent began to make an inquiry on the matter. Subsequent calls to his line rang out.

However, the lawyer, Mr. Onome Okodiya, who spoke on behalf of the family, said it was not true that Mama G promised to pay for the birthday celebration or was forcefully taken away from the bar.

He said the matter was being investigated by the state police command, adding that the N200,000 was paid to the bar manager “in good faith” pending the outcome of a reconciliatory move.

Okodiya said, “We deny that Mrs. Shaw owed that kind of money. When the barman chose to use the police in Lekki to enforce the debt, we made a report to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the case is being investigated. We are going to wait for the outcome of the investigation.

“The payment (N200,000) was made in good faith while awaiting reconciliation. There is a scam which we are trying to unravel. One person is claiming over N700,000; another person is claiming over N800,000. What is the value of the stock they have? Everybody is under investigation in respect of this matter.”
