N35bn Been Approved By President Muhammadu Buhari For The Niger Delta Amnesty Programme

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an additional N35 billion to the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme for the sustenance of the new understanding between the Federal Government and the oil-producing communities of the region.
A statement from the office of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo reads
"Currently the Amnesty Office has now paid up all ex-militants backlog of their stipends up to the end of 2016. The release of the additional funds is coming after presidential level interactive engagements in the Niger Delta, where the Buhari administration has enunciated a New Vision for the oil-producing areas based on the presentation made by the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, to the President when he received leaders and stakeholders from the region last November.
Subsequently, the President asked his deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, to embark on a tour of the region that saw him visiting several oil-producing States in the country.  Besides the monthly payment of about N65, 000 to N66,000 to the ex-militants, the funds would also go to the provision of reintegration activities under the Amnesty Programme including payment of tuition fees for beneficiaries from Niger Delta who are in post-secondary institutions at home and abroad, payment of in-training & hazard allowances and vocational training costs'.

NDLEA Arrested 2 Women Caught With 108 Wraps of Cocaine (Photos)

Men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, foiled attempts by 2 grandmothers to unlawfully export narcotic drugs to New York, United States and Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The women ingested 108 wraps of substances that tested positive for heroin and cocaine during outward screening of passengers at the Murtala Mohammed Int'l Airport (MMIA) Lagos.

60yrs old Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy ingested 83 wraps of heroin weighing 1.105kg on her way to the United States.

59yrs Amodu Ayisat Grace ingested 25 wraps of cocaine weighing 275 grammes on her way to Saudi Arabia.

They blamed their involvement in drug trafficking on financial hardship.

NDLEA preliminary investigation revealed it is the first time a grandmother of 60 years will ingest a whopping 83 wraps of narcotics.

The second suspect was going to Saudi Arabia where drug trafficking attracts capital punishment.

Her timely arrest saved her from the ordeals of painful and ignoble death in a foreign country.

NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, said: “Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy was arrested while boarding a Virgin Atlantic flight to New York while Amodu Grace was caught trying to board an Ethiopian airline flight on her way to Medina, Saudi Arabia. The cases are under investigation”.

Mrs. Adebayo, who sells provision at Ikorodu, Lagos said drug trafficking was an afterthought.

“I am a divorcee selling provision for survival. Things became rough and tough for me when I lost my capital due to family problems.

“It has been my dream to travel to the United States in search of greener pastures.

“My involvement in drug trafficking was an afterthought. My intention when I got my visa last year was to go and work to take care of my needs without being a burden to anyone. Everything changed suddenly when I met an old friend at a party.

“They took care of my travel expenses and gave me $3,000 with a promise to assist me secure a job in the United States.

“It was few hours to my journey that they brought the drugs for me to swallow. They said that it was my contribution for the kindness and money spent on my trip but it turned out to be my biggest mistake,” the indigene of Kogi State said.

On her part, Mrs. Amodu told investigators as a Muslim she was glad to travel to Saudi Arabia but her journey terminated at the NDLEA office.

“I was happy when they offered to sponsor my trip to Saudi Arabia but I never knew it will end in my detention.

“I sell fufu (staple food from cassava) to take care of my four children as a widow and this has been very challenging.

“They enticed me with a visit to Saudi Arabia and a handsome reward and I fell for trick.

“I only swallowed 25 wraps of the drug. Unfortunately I could not get to Saudi Arabia because of my arrest.”

NDLEA chairman Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) said it is shocking and shameful for grandmothers to be involved in drug trafficking.

  • “This move by drug cartels to recruit grandmothers as mules is very disturbing, shocking and shameful. A situation where grandmothers have become a bad influence on their children and grandchildren is highly regrettable,” he stated.

Unknown Gunmen Killed Monarch In Rivers

Suspected assassins have killed the paramount ruler of Orokpor village in Rumueme Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Charles Miniku.

It was gathered that Miniku was assassinated on Friday night during a meeting with other chiefs in the area inside the village hall.

The development caused panic in the area as several buildings were set ablaze.

A source who spoke on condition anonymity said the killers stormed the council of chiefs meeting attended by some traditional rulers and chiefs, and shot their target to death.

The source disclosed that some youth, loyal to the murdered chief, went on rampage and allegedly burnt down houses of the people they linked with the killing.

Miniku, until his death, was the secretary of a faction of the community leadership, which had been in dispute. Last year, Miniku escaped an assassination after he was accused of killing a rival chief in the community.

Property worth millions of naira were destroyed in the community by the rampaging youths but the riot was later calmed through the intervention of the police.

Another source, identified only as Prince, said the murder was related to several communal issues concerning Miniku within the community. Prince linked the murder to chieftaincy tussle and sharing of entitlements from Nigerian Agip Oil Company located in the area.

The spokesperson for the police in Rivers, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said three suspects had been arrested in connection with the murder of the monarch.

He said police were able to pacify the angry youths, and that normalcy had returned to the area.

“Yes, I can confirm the incident and we have made adequate deployment. We have taken over the community. We suspect that the situation could have degenerated and more lives would have been lost. But we were able to curtail the rampaging youths. People have been asked to go about their lawful duties."

Explaining how he came about the decayed human skull, Alimi said

He claimed that he planned to use the skull to prepare charm to scare robbers away from a land.

He said, “I did not exhume any dead body. I was going to bury it (the skull) on my site around Ijaye in order to scare away robbers who have sacked seven towns in the area. I planned to have another church on the site where I wanted to bury the human skull. I had yet to reach my site when police stopped me and found the skull in my possession.

“I was also caught with other charms. My father was a herbalist and he taught me how to prepare some charms. I did not plan to harm anyone with it or prepare money ritual.”
