Tech: Next WhatsApp Update May Include a New Feature of "Live Location"

WhatsApp has submitted a new update in the Google Play beta program. Tagged as version 2.27.213 the update reveals some new features as compared to the last version and was first reported on
WABetainfo.

Key among these new features is ‘Live Location’. The update basically reveals the location icon of the user in the chat list upon enabling the live location option inside Privacy settings.

The live location has a Green icon and also comes with an option (“Send this location”) to share the live location. This new option has replaced the normal location sharing option which was available in previous beta version. The live location option used to be disabled by default but it will soon be enabled (as a default) once the developers are sure of it being bug free.

Users will also be able to send text status updates to their contacts with a new option called “New text status” which can be managed in Status under Privacy setting. Users will also be able to customise their text status with different fonts (two options available), colors and insert emoji to it.

WhatsApp will choose a random color everytime the user has to update their status. For now, there is no option to choose a custom color of your choice from the palette. If users want to update their status with a message from a chat thread, this is now possible, but without customisations. If they want to customise and edit it, they will have to select message > Share > WhatsApp and select ‘My Status’.

Sometimes photos and videos shared from the Gallery gets delivered to recipients in a random order. WhatsApp is said to have fixed is this annoying problem in the new update.

Lastly, users will also be able to see their recent photos by swiping up the screen after they open the camera in the app.

Indeed, these are features and improvements visible in the beta version of the app. However, you can expect these to arrive in the coming consumer updates.

Tech: Virtual Assistant of Google Facing Widespread Outage on "Home" Devices

Google pinned a lot of hope on its virtual assistant ‘Home’ to take on Amazon’s ‘Alexa‘ but it appears that it has gone bonkers with the users reporting indifferent behaviour from ‘Home’.

The virtual assistant is spitting out errors instead of controlling smart home devices and answering questions. “According to multiple online complaints, there’s a Google Home outage affecting a significant portion of users,” tech website, Android Police, reported on Monday. To know if Home is affected, users need to use a trigger phrase and it will respond with “Hmm, something went wrong. Try again in a few seconds,” or “There was a glitch. Try again in a few seconds.”

“Most users say the issues started popping up in the last day or two and today Google Home has a nearly 100 percent failure rate,” the report said. What is interesting is that other devices with Google Assistant are working fine.

While some owners reported that a hard reset of ‘Home’ fixed the issue, many others still had problems after resetting.

Early in May, according to
reports , Google had introduced ‘Assistant’, at its annual developer conference, and could understand different voices while Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, had difficulty in understanding Indian accents.

This Can't Be True, Released CHIBOK Girls Cant Speak English?

UNBELIVEBLE! This is certainly how it would sound to many people. How could it have been true, others may ask.

But whether you are in a state of unbelief or not, this is to reveal that most of the released Chibok school girls can hardly speak English.

Indeed, as you read along, you will ponder and arrive at some conclusions on why students, who were in Senior Secondary School class three as of the time of their abduction by Boko Haram insurgents, could not speak English.

While indications to this effect emerged when the Minster of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Aisha Alhassan received 82 Chibok girls, findings by Saturday Vanguard across the states in the Northeast geopolitical zone produced more shocking revelations.

She had said that her Ministry would ensure the girls learnt how to speak English so they could be able to sit for Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations. To achieve this, it was learnt that the Federal Government has concluded plans to enroll the girls in junior secondary school class three.

It was gathered that the poor standard of education in Northern Nigeria made the inability of the girls to speak English possible. Saturday Vanguard learnt that the girls like many in that part of Nigeria lacked quality education right from primary school. For instance, in Chibok and other communities in Borno, there is no nursery school. Students were often enrolled directly into primary schools, so long as they had attained the age of 10 or 12.

Also, in most cases, the teachers were not adequately remunerated while lessons were done in unconducive environments.

Similarly, most of the public schools lack teaching materials, depriving the teachers and students the opportunity to learn, embark on research and development. Most of the teachers resort to using vernacular especially when teaching subjects like physics and chemistry.

In most cases, vernacular was used as the official communication means while conducting assemblies and town hall meetings. Likewise, the poor financial status of parents and guardians was found to be another factor. For instance, in Chibok community, there is no single private school, students who could even afford to be enrolled into private schools travel to Maiduguri, Adamawa and Gombe for quality education.

Another factor is the method of employing teachers in the Borno State Teaching Service Board, (TSB) which is characterised by favouritism. In one of his interviews, the state governor, Kashim Shettima admitted thus: “In 2011 WAEC examinations, only three students at one of the government secondary schools in Borno North Senatorial District were able to pass five credits.

Unfortunately, those lucky three students were not indigenes of the state, as their fathers were serving soldiers at Monguno Military barracks then”. A teacher in Chibok, who identified himself as Mr. Amos Dawi said, “Apart from the poor quality of teaching materials as well as unqualified teachers, the students themselves are not helping matters, as most of them devote their interest to farming instead of dedicating themselves into learning.

“More so, it will interest you to note that government girls secondary school, Chibok and other schools in the state have no English or Mathematic teachers.” Also, an educationist, Dr. James John attributed the problem to lack of training and retraining of teachers by the Borno State Teaching Service Board.

He said teachers mostly those living in the rural areas attend workshops. An escaped schoolgirl who pleaded anonymous for security reasons told our Correspondent thus:”Another major reason is the current trauma which the girls are undergoing.

Each time we open our mouth to speak English, we believe the Boko Haram terrorists are still watching us, so we quickly switch to our dialect or Hausa language which is our dominant language in the north without realizing it. Boko Haram hates anything Western Education and English language is one of them.”

Tech: Google's Waymo Begins Testing of It's Autonomous Truck

Amid the tussle with Uber on the theft of its self-driving car technology, Google’s Waymo has started testing its own autonomous truck. According to a report in BuzzFeed, Waymo’s self-driving truck was spotted in a photo and the development was later confirmed by the company.

A spokesperson from Waymo — Google’s self-driving car arm — said that it took “eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck.” Safety was the focus of the expansion into the sector, the spokesperson said, with the aim of reducing “thousands of trucking-related deaths each year”.

Waymo confirmed that it was only testing one vehicle at the moment and it was still manually driving it on a public road in order to collect data. Its rival Uber has already delivered its first shipment in a self-driving freight vehicle last August — a short time after it bought trucking startup Otto for $680 million.

Waymo and Uber became fierce rivals when the former sued and filed a lawsuit against the latter for allegedly stealing trade secrets and self-driving technology from it. The lawsuit argued that former Waymo manager Anthony Levandowski took information when he left the company and later co-founded Otto in January 2016. Earlier this week, Uber fired Levandowski for allegedly stealing some 14,000 documents from Waymo.

Lady Try To Smuggled Drug as She Put Drugs on Stomach and Pretend To Be Pregnant (See Photos)

A young woman in Brazil probably thought she’d come up with a foolproof way of smuggling drugs when she masqueraded as a pregnant woman.

Police wouldn’t search a pregnant woman, right? Wrong.

The 24-year-old brunette created an elaborate fake bump, which was stuck to her stomach with lengths of tape and then covered with clothes. Inside the “belly” was 3kg of cocaine.

A man travelling with her was reportedly also arrested.

It is not clear what punishment, if any, the pair received.

This is not the first time a woman has tried smuggling drugs by pretending to be pregnant.

Hmmmmm!. End of time pregnancy. Lol.

Tech: Microsoft Mistakenly Releases Internal Windows 10 Builds

Microsoft has apologised for accidentally releasing builds from some of its internal branches for PC and mobile that were rolled out due to the “inadvertent deployment” to the engineering system that controls the release of builds to the Windows Insiders. Microsoft was forced to apologise late on Friday night after some confidential and internal Windows 10 builds were leaked and it has now reverted the issue to ensure these development builds do not reach more people, Dona Sarkar, Microsoft’s head of its Windows Insiders programme, wrote in a blog post.

“We apologise for this inconvenience and thank you for being a Windows Insider,” Sarkar added, saying Microsoft will not release any new builds this week. The Windows Insider by Microsoft is a programme that allows users who own a valid Windows 10 license to sign up for early builds of the operating system previously only accessible to developers. The term build refers to the process by which source code is converted into a stand-alone form that can be run on a computer.

Microsoft said although it has put blocks in place to check the dissemination of the build, a “small portion” of Windows 10 users still received them. What is worrisome is that Windows 10 testers who installed the mobile build, had their phones into a reboot loop which led the devices to crash. To come out of this problem, testers will have to recover and wipe the device using the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

Meanwhile, Windows 10 testers who installed the PC build will have to wait for Microsoft to publish a newer build or roll back using the recovery option in Windows 10 settings.

Tech: Toyota's Flying Car to Light The Olympic Flame at Tokyo 2020 Summer Games

Engineers, supported by Toyota Motor Corp, demonstrated their flying car on Saturday, which they hope will be able to light up the Olympic flame for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games.

“Cartivator”, a start-up group of about 30 engineers including some young Toyota employees, started to develop a flying car “SkyDrive” in 2014 with the help of crowdfunding. Head of Cartivator, Tsubasa Nakamura, said that while the car was still at an early stage of development, the group expects to conduct the first manned-flight by the end of 2018.

During their demonstration, the current test model was able to get off and float on the ground for a few seconds. Nakamura said the design needed more stability so the prototype would be able to fly long and high enough to reach the Olympic flame.

Engineers of Cartivator are aiming to make their flying car the world’s smallest electric vehicle, which can be used in small urban areas, and hopes to commercialize the car in 2025.

Last month, Toyota Motor and its group of companies agreed to invest 42.5 million yen ($385,000) in the project for the next three years. Nakamura said the group is working hard to improve the design, hoping to receive further investment from the company.

Companies in the world have been competing to develop the first flying car or vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicles. Uber Technologies Inc announced its plan to deploy its flying taxi service by 2020 in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, and Dubai. Airbus Group is also working on developing its flying car under its division called Urban Air Mobility.

But makers of “flying cars” still face hurdles, including convincing regulators and the public that their products can be used safely. Governments are still grappling with regulations for drones and driverless cars.
