Nigeria Ranked The 11th Most Noodles-Consuming Country In The World

The World Instant Noodles Association has ranked Nigeria as the 11th country in the world with a strong demand for noodles. The first position is shared between China and Hong Kong with a total of 41,450 Million servings. Nigeria is 11th with 1,920 million servings.

The World Instant Noodles Association was created primarily to accumulate and share information about technical issues related to the quality development of instant noodles so that people can enjoy instant noodles with safety and trust. They also collect and distribute industry data such as the global demand for instant noodles.

According to the 2019 Expenditure pattern report, it was revealed that of the total household expenditure, 56.65% of the household expenditure in 2019 was spent on food, with a balance of about 43.35 spent on non-food items.

The report further states that Nigerians spent a whopping N22.7 trillion on food-related expendiures. People purchased more of carbohydrates with Starchy Roots, Tubers, and Plantain dominating with about N2.5 trillion. Rice a major staple food item cost Nigerians about N1.9 trillion while vegetables cost N1.7 trillion. It was also discovered that people spend about 4.5 trillion eating outside of their homes.

Nigerians are currently seeking alternatives to rice and other expensive food items in the market and one of the alternatives is noodles. The cost of other food items would therefore drive people to seek cheaper substitutes for the major foods available.

As we all know the ban on foreign rice has contributed to the spike in the price of rice and other alternative foods and to worsen the matter is the impact of COVID 19. The COVID period has caused an increase in transportation fares, unemployment, and companies paying half salaries. It has also impacted negatively the revenues of businesses and the financial power of the government of Nigeria. All these have contributed to low money circulation and an increase in the prices of services and commodities.

This probably has contributed to the increase in instant noodles consumption in Nigeria coupled with the constant and deliberate creation of mental images of noodles by the top brands and the use of large distribution networks.

UPDATE! NASU Starts Warning Strike Today

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) will commence their 14-day warning strike today.

In a letter dated September 28, 2020, jointly signed by the General Secretary of NASU, Mr. Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, and addressed to branch Chairmen of NASU and SSANU, the unions said the decision to embark on a 14-day warning strike was in fulfillment of their threat to begin the action as soon as the federal government directs universities to resume academic activities.

The letter read in part:

“Kindly recall earlier information on the above subject matter wherein it was conveyed that the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU would embark on a 14-day industrial action immediately universities resume following the COVID-19 lockdown.

“Following the recent directives from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to Vice-Chancellors for the immediate resumption/safe reopening of universities, you are hereby directed to commence a 14-day warning strike effective from October 5 to 19, 2020.”

The two unions said the warning strike could turn into full-blown industrial action if their grievances are not addressed by the federal government.

They listed their grievances to include, inconsistencies of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) in the payment of salaries of their members; non-payment of arrears of earned allowances being owed NASU and SSANU members despite various memoranda of understanding; non-payment of arrears of national minimum wage to their members and non-payment of retirement benefits to outgone members.

The non-academic staff unions also alleged lack of seriousness and delays by the government in the renegotiation of the 2009 FG/NASU and SSANU agreements; usurpation of the headship of non-teaching units by academic staff in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures; neglect and poor funding of state universities; and corruption in the university system.

They also cited non-constitution of visitation panels for the universities in line with the laws as other developments that are impacting negatively on their members.

“Please note that this warning strike is a prelude to a full-blown, total and indefinite industrial action if the grievances highlighted above are not properly addressed,” the unions warned.

Vice President Osinbajo Shows Concern on Public Interest, Says Police Violations Of People’s Rights Unacceptable, Annoying

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday reacted to the recent outcry by Nigerians against the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force.

Osinbajo speaking to reporters after a meeting with the inspector-general of police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said he is concerned and angered over the SARS operatives accused of harassing and sometimes maiming and killing Nigerians.

He said:

“I am very concerned and in fact sometimes angry about what I see happening to young men and women who are arrested and, in some cases, maimed or killed by men of the police force, in some cases, those who man tactical units of the police force such as SARS and other units.

It is completely objectionable. It is unacceptable. These are individuals who are meant to protect Nigerians. The arrest, maiming, killing of young people, or anyone at all by these individuals is completely wrong. It is unlawful, it is illegal and all those involved ought to be investigated and prosecuted.

This afternoon, I had a meeting with the IG of Police, we reviewed several of these issues. The President and I had had discussions on this. He is very concerned about this and he wants to see a reform of this process and I am sure you are probably aware that the IG has issued a statement, looking at all these issues, in particular, warning against the use of these tactical forces such as SARS for the purposes of anything other than anti-bribery as it is supposed to be.

For example, in the statement, he specifically said that we can’t have a situation where SARS will say they are investigating cybercrime and arresting young men and women who are carrying laptops and their phones.

Cybercrime is electronic crime. There is no way that you can investigate that by seizing people’s phones in a taxi. I think it is very obvious that this is a major concern. The few bad eggs within the police force are causing a lot of these.

Of course, it is all over the place in different states. There is the need of course to take serious action. I think that the IG’s statement today is a good first step. He has said clearly that policemen must wear police uniforms.

You cannot say that because you belong to a tactical unit, you can dress in your casual clothing and be armed, because people can’t even tell the difference between robbers and the police if you are not properly dressed in police uniform. So, clearly, reform is in the offing.”

The Vice President added that Nigerians to continue to bring the issue regularly to the attention of the government and the police.

“I think that we all have to work together to ensure that the police and law enforcement agents, do what their duty is and their duty is to protect us, protect our society and livelihoods and homes.

By the way, many of them are doing their duties excellently well, but there are some of them who are engaged in these activities. So, we must see this as something we all must work together to achieve, as individuals, to bring to the attention of the police and government, where there have been violations.

And on the part of the government and the police: to ensure that every one of those allegations is properly investigated and those found responsible are prosecuted and publicized so that people know that prosecution has taken place and this is the consequence. I am very confident that we will have a reformed police force and that process has already begun.”.
