Hoodlums had hijacked the #EndSARS protest in the state, unleashing violence on residents and destroying public and private properties.
Vehicles, automated teller machines, traffic lights were vandalised, and not even Awolowo’s statue was spared during the looting, as his pair of glasses are yet to be found.
Awolowo, the premier of the western region from 1954 to 1960, is known for his unique round-shaped glasses.
Akinwunmi Ambode, former governor of Lagos, in September 2017, unveiled the 20-feet statue located on Obafemi Awolowo Way close to the Lagos Television (LTV) junction in Ikeja.
Ambode had said the monument was erected to celebrate the legendary achievements and contributions of Awolowo to the development of the country.
Below are photos of the statue with and without the glasses.
Recall that Sanwo-Olu had told CNN that the footage of the shooting showed that the Nigerian Army is responsible for the incident.
Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, Army PRO,Osoba Olaniyi said soldiers stayed away from the End SARS protests until the Lagos government invited them to restore order. He said while restoring order, soldiers did not shoot protesters, describing reports on the attack of the protesters by the military as fake.
“The attention of Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to a viral video on social media in which it was alleged that civilian protesters were massacred by soldiers at Lekki Toll Plaza. This allegation is untrue, unfounded and aimed at causing anarchy in the country.

“At no time did soldiers of the Nigerian Army open fire on any civilian. From the onset of the ENDSARS protest, there was no time personnel of 81 Division Nigerian Army Lagos were involved. However, the decision to call in the military was taken by the Lagos State Government (LASG) after a 24- hour curfew was imposed.
Finally, Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army reiterates Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities did not shoot at any civilian as there are glaring and convincing evidence to attest to this fact.
“This allegation is the hand work of mischief makers who will stop at nothing to tarnish the image of the Nigerian Army. The general public is hereby enjoined to discountenance this allegation as there is no iota of truth therein.”

Alex Ekubo has stated that the Lekki tollgate area in Lagos should be renamed in the memory of #EndSARS protesters who lost their lives at the spot.
This comes following a massacre that took place on the 20th of October at the tollgate area usually the #Endsars protest ground in Lagos.
Alex, however, suggested that as a sign of respect to the fallen comrades, the Lekki tollgate should get a new name that will symbolize a moment in history that should never be forgotten.
He wrote,, “Lekki Toll Plaza, should be renamed Lekki Memorial Way… & be made Toll Free… in Honor of our fallen comrades… Rt if you agree.”
Toke Makinwa in a post via her Insta stories hailed Drake at 34 as she referred to him as her baby daddy.

BBC reported that the Nigerian President disclosed this during a virtual meeting with former leaders and security chiefs on Friday October 23. He said that 51 civilians, 11 police officers, and seven soldiers were killed in the unrest.
Buhari was quoted saying in a statement released by Femi Adesina that the killing came off an “initial genuine and well-intended protest of youths which was hijacked and misdirected”.
It was further gathered that the Nigerian President who stated that his administration will not allow miscreants and criminals to continue to perpetrate acts of hooliganism in the country, accused the protesters of refusing to call off the protest in spite of meeting their demands.
The statement read;
”Unfortunately, the protesters refused to call off the protest and engage the government to address their grievances. Instead, they became emboldened and gradually turned violent.
”We shall also continue to ensure that liberty and freedom, as well as the fundamental rights of all citizens are protected. Here, I want to also reaffirm our commitment to preserving the unity of this country.
“The President thanked the former Heads of State for attending the meeting and their invaluable comments, observations and advice, adding that ‘Nigerians expect nothing less from responsible statesmen’.
“Each of the former leaders commended President Buhari for steps taken so far to restore calm and order to the country and also applauded the presidential broadcast of Thursday as detailed and soothing to the country.
“The former heads of state were unanimous in their view that generation of employment and growing the economy including through direct foreign investments were critical to checking youth restiveness.
“The former heads of state also condemned the divisive and inciting pronouncements of separatists and were of the opinion that such acts should be stopped.
“Equally, the former leaders commended the actions taken by governors to address the demands of the ENDSARS protesters and their efforts to check the excesses of those who perpetrated violent acts and conduct.
“Finally, they called on youths to pursue peaceful means, in seeking
redress through engagement with government and encouraged further
conversation with the youths and other stakeholders in the country.”
The statue was at Denis Memorial Grammar School Roundabout, Awka Avenue, Onitsha, known as Zik Roundabout. While the mob were on a rampage, they doused the statue with petrol before setting it on fire.
As they burnt the stature, the mob were shouting “You put us in this mess by championing one Nigeria,” “You are the cause of our trouble,” amongst other uncomplimentary remarks.
In several parts of the country, hoodlums hijacked the #EndSARS protest, causing wanton destruction of lives and properties and forcing different state government’s to impose curfew.
