#EndSARS: Police Withdraws Suit Seeking to Stop The Judicial Panels of Inquiry

The Nigeria police force (NPF) has applied to withdraw the suit challenging the legality of the judicial panels set up to probe allegations of brutality and human rights abuses against the force.

In a suit marked FHC/ ABJ/CS/1492/2020 and filed by O.M Atoyebi, police counsel, the force had argued that the establishment of panels of inquiry by state governors to investigate its activities was illegal and unconstitutional. It asked the court to restrain the defendants from conducting any investigation to probe the affairs of the security agency.

However, on Thursday, December 3, the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, expressed his disapproval over the suit and ordered an investigation. He also issued a query to the Legal officer of the police.

In a notice of discontinuance filed by Festus Ibude, police counsel, on Friday, the police told the court that it wishes to withdraw the suit against all the defendants.

“Take notice that the plaintiff herein intends to and doth hereby wholly withdraws its suit against all the defendants,” the notice read.

Train Ride From Lagos To Ibadan To Cost Between ₦3000 – ₦6000

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has announced the fares on the the new Lagos-Ibadan train service, which would begin operations by January, 2021.

Amaechi made the announcement disclosure during the inauguration of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) in Abuja on Friday.

Amaechi said: “I have received the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari to inaugurate the Lagos/Ibadan rail project by January 2021 which will make Nigerians see the way the standard gauge railway looked like.

“Today I approved the charges on passengers from Lagos to Ibadan. We just transfer how we charged from Abuja to Kaduna.

“We charge N3,000 per Economy seat, N5,000 for Business class and N6,000 for First class, the same is applicable to Lagos to Ibadan.

“It should have started running by now before Mr President inaugurates it by January.”

The minister said that the ministry would collaborate with CIOTA to enable them achieved their objectives.

He said that CIOTA role was critical to the growth of transportation in Nigeria, adding that the country had advanced a lot in the area of transportation.

Meanwhile, the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA), says the institute has begun the process of making transportation a professional sector in the country.

Dr Bashir Jamoh, the National President and Chairman of Council said the move is to ensure that the sector achieves the global best standards and practices.

He said the institute would draw up a curriculum to keep the professionals abreast of developments in the transport sector.

Arik Airline Sacks 300 Workers

Three hundred members of staff of Arik Airlines have been relieved of their duties.

The management of the airline disclosed this in a statement released today Friday, December 4. The management hinged its decision to sack the workers on the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its operations.

Recall that Nigerian airspace was shut in March this year and opened in July as part of measures to contain the spread of the Coronavirus in Nigeria.

The press statement titled, “Arik Air management declares 300 staff redundant”, reads in part

“Arising from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the constrained ability of the airline to complete heavy maintenance activities and return its planes to operations, stunted revenues against increasing operational costs, the management of Arik Air (In Receivership) has declared 300 staff members redundant to its current level of operations.

“The leadership of the impacted unions has been contacted to negotiate a redundancy package for the affected staff.”

Court Stops EFCC’s From Arresting Femi Fani-Kayode and Here is Why

An application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for the arrest of former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode was on Wednesday December 2 rejected by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

This came after EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Mr Mohammed Abubakar asked for an arrest warrant from the court against the ex-minister following his absence from Wednesday’s proceedings of his trial involving alleged diversion of N26m he received from the then National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, in 2014.

Femi Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Mr Wale Balogun however opposed the application and also tendered a medical report dated November 24, 2020 in which the former minister was advised to observe some bed rest.

Ruling on the application, Justice John Tsoho, who is also the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court rejected on grounds of FFK’s lawyer showing that he had justifiable grounds to be absent from the trial on Wednesday.

The case was then adjourned till February 23 and 24.

Nigeria Remains at Terrorists’ Mercy Because we are Denied Weapons – Lai Mohammed Says

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has commented on the killing of 43 rice farmers by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state over the weekend.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state on Monday November 30, the minister said Nigeria is still at the mercy of terorrists because they are denied the ability to purchase weapons.

Lai Mohammed described the killing as “unfortunate” and further stated that the terrorists use media and publicity as oxygen.

He said;

“When we talk about terrorism, people don’t seem to appreciate that terrorism is not a local issue, it is a global issue and there is no part of the world that doesn’t experience its own pocket of terrorism.

But you must also note that we are dealing with terrorists who are financed globally and we also need more support from global partners. For instance, Nigeria has made an attempt to acquire a better and more effective platform to deal with terrorists but for one reason or the other we have been denied this platform, these weapons and without adequate weapons or platform we remain at the mercy of terrorists.

You see fighting terrorists is not a joke because what actually happened in Borno State is unfortunate but you must also look at the strategy of the terrorists.

Terrorists use media and publicity as oxygen, so when they go on this kind of mindless killing of people. It is not that the government is not doing enough. Terrorism whether in Afghanistan or anywhere in the world has the same concept, a group of people who are extremist in their thoughts who don’t think that you and me should be alive.”

Police re-arrest 4 Prisoners Who Escaped From Edo Prison

Four prisoners who escaped from Oko Prison during the #EndSARS crisis have been re-arrested by the police.

The suspects were paraded at the Nigeria Police Force tactical unit in Abuja, alongside others who were arrested for various offences bordering on armed robbery, car theft, unlawful possession of weapons, illegal dealing and selling of weapons.

The prisoners who escaped from the facility have been identified as Adebayo Opeyemi, Oloride Benjamin, Peter Osas, Hudu Musa and Frank Odion.

While Mr Opeyemi is a dismissed soldier, Mr Benjamin was convicted and sentenced to death and Mr Musa had nine months remaining to serve out his prison term.

It was gathered that the suspects have snatched a total of four vehicles since their escape. Mr Benjamin on the other hand, snatched a vehicle 30mins after he escaped because he needed to leave Benin City.
