UK Finally Clears Air on Yakubu Gowon’s Alleged Looting of CBN
The Nation reports that the United Kingdom distanced itself from the alleged looting, saying that a member of its parliament, Tom Tugendhat, who made the allegation is on his own.
It was gathered that the action followed a petition to the British parliament by a group, Igbo for a Progressive Nigeria (IPAN), demanding details about the allegation.
The report said that Tugendhat had during the Westminster Hall debate on November 23, accused Gowon of looting half of the Central Bank of Nigeria while he (Gowon) held sway.
Tugendhat had said:
“Some people would remember when General Gowon left Nigeria with half of the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London.”
The newspaper also noted that while replying IPAN’s petition in a letter dated December 21 and signed by a member of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Nigeria unit, one Angela disclosed that Tugendhat made the statement in his own personal capacity, and not for the British Parliament or the United Kingdom.
Angela said:
“I am replying as a member of the FCDO Nigeria Unit. I recognise there is concern about the comments made by Tom Tugendhat MP about former Nigerian Head of State, General Gowon, during the Westminster Hall debate on 23 November.”
I Thought EndSARS Protests Was Against A Virus - Anthony Joshua Says
In an exclusive interview with Punch correspondent, Joshua said because he had never been a victim of police brutality while in Nigeria, he had never heard of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
Joshua joined global stars in supporting the #EndSARS movement after Nigerians had gone to the streets to protest against the activities of SARS whose officers were accused of extrajudicial killings, unlawful detentions, torture, extortion and various forms of abuses.
The boxer said it was after his uncle called his attention to the protests in Nigeria that he had to read more about SARS and Nigeria’s history.
“I never knew what SARS was during my time in Nigeria; I never encountered SARS, so, when the movement started happening, I thought SARS was maybe like a virus, I didn’t know SARS. One day after training, my uncle called me and this was just before the issue of the Lekki toll gate, about five hours before it, he called me and told me about the situation on the ground. He told me the people of Nigeria loved me and wanted to hear my voice on it,”
“I told him I didn’t know enough about it to talk about it and he said I should just lend my voice and bring awareness. So, I said if it’s what I can do for now, let me just lend my voice and bring my attention to it because I have a big platform. So, I just said it’s important to find a common ground because you can’t overthrow the government in a minute, but we need to find a common solution that will benefit the people.
“So I thought it was important for me to send out a positive message and shortly after that, about four hours later, people had been murdered at the toll gate. So, I said this wasn’t only about finding a common ground, this had to stop. But I didn’t want to go back on my message, I had sent a message out and I had done a lot more research about the #EndSARS movement.

Facebook Removes Apple’s Blue Tick Verification Amid Escalating Feud
The Mark Zuckerberg-founded company usually gives giant businesses an organizations blue ticks to symbolize their authenticity.
Apple’s main rivals, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard and Samsung, all have been given blue tick verification by Facebook.
It comes amid a feud between Facebook and Twitter over privacy.
At the crux of the issue is changes to Apple’s iOS 14 that will require users to give permission in order for apps to track them for advertising purposes.
The changes will restrict companies, including Facebook, from gathering data on users to provide personalized ads.
Media consultant Matt Navarra noticed the blue tick had vanished from Apple’s page on Facebook Tuesday morning – a week after the Mark Zuckerberg-founded site slammed the iPhone maker over its upcoming privacy changes.
‘Facebook has removed Apple’s blue tick Page verification,’ Navarra wrote.
On Facebook, almost all big brands and organizations are given a blue tick on their official social media pages to symbolize their authenticity.
Apple’s main rivals, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and Samsung have all been given such ticks by Facebook.
It is unclear exactly when Facebook decided to delete Apple’s blue tick. DailyMail.com has reached out to the company for comment.
Apple still has a blue tick verification on Instagram – which is owned by Facebook.
Silicon Valley’s latest war over privacy erupted last week. At the crux of the issue is changes to Apple’s iOS 14.4, which will go live next year and require users to give permission in order for apps to track them for advertising purposes.
Why My Health Centre Project in Ibadan is ‘Too Small’ – Akin Alabi
Mr Alabi came under criticism on social media when he shared photos of the heath centre on Wednesday night.
Some social media users said the building was “too small”.
Responding to the criticism, the lawmaker said he only rehabilitated the heath centre, adding that he did not have the power to expand it.
“About those saying the place is too small. Good question. Well, it is a small health center in a small village that was rehabilitated. The place gets like five patients a day. I am not sure there is any sense expanding it. I don’t even have the powers to have it expanded,” he wrote on Thursday.
He added: “Some are asking why was the contract given to an Abuja contractor. The answer is I had no say. That question has to go to National Health Care Development Agency. I do not award contracts. Lawmakers do not award contracts. I have never met this contractor. I don’t plan to.”

Appeasing his critics, Alabi said he was not boasting about the project.
“In the original post, it wasn’t like I boasted that this was massive or an ‘ultra modern’ or a world class facility. I helped connect the village and the agency, worked hard to make sure it happened. The entire details are in the pictures. No bragging. I don’t understand the vex,” wrote the legislator.
