FG Asks Nigerian Governors to Sign Death Warrants of Over 3,000 Prisoners, Gives Reason for Demand

The federal government through the ministry of interior has said the signing of death warrants of condemned inmates on death row is one of the ways state governors can help reduce the population pressure on custodial facilities across the country.

The minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the statement on Friday, July 23, in Osogbo, Osun state, when inaugurating the newly constructed headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Daily Trust reported.

He explained that condemned inmates who have exhausted their appeals and are not challenging the conviction could have their death warrant signed by state governors

Aregbesola pointed out that doing such would bring closure to their cases.

The minister disclosed that out of the 3,008 condemned criminals awaiting executions in Nigerian prisons, 2,952 were males and 56 females.

He also stated that governors could free some condemned convicts on compassionate grounds due to old age or illness.

According to Aregbesola, other inmates that have demonstrated exceptionally good behaviour could also be released or have their sentences commuted to life or specific terms in jail.

He explained that the current population of inmates has surpassed the maximum capacity of correctional facilities in the country, Vanguard reported.

The minister disclosed that 68,747 inmates, comprising of 67,422 males and 1,325 females, are now been detained in facilities meant for 57,278 detainees.

He also noted that 50,992 inmates, representing 74 % of the total population of inmates in the nation’s custodial centres were awaiting trial inmates while only 17,755 inmates which is a mere 26 % were the actual convicts.

Nobody Should Question Obi Cubana’s Source Of Wealth — Emeka Ike says

A week after the elaborate burial of Obi Iyiegbu, alias Obi Cubana, the mother of nightclub owner and billionaire Obi Iyiegbu, actor Emeka Ike has declared that people who criticize the excessive display of wealth at the weeklong ceremony have no right to do so.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, Ike said, “We all mind one another’s business in this country because people are always looking for the negative things. As he (Iyiegbu) is spending, it shouldn’t be anybody’s problem. He is simply having fun. And if it is a way of honouring his late mother, what stops him from calling his friends to come around and celebrate her life? Maybe, that’s his way of doing it. He has also said that he has helped many people and many of them would want to repay the favour.”

Ike also disagreed with those who said that Nollywood painted most rich Igbo people as occultists. He said, “There are different ways people can show their affluence. Some might choose to ‘spray’ money and it could be a one-off thing. I don’t think I have heard Kanayo Kanayo spraying money anywhere before now.

“We are not going to carpet all that because of someone spraying money at a function. Maybe Cubana had been nice to them and they decided to spray that amount of money. However, it is left for the government to decide whether to ban spraying of money or not.”

The actor also maintained that Nollywood actors were not all about showing off. He said, “People can have whatever opinion they want about Nollywood. The industry is diverse and there are many people working in it. The fact that some actors sprayed money there does not mean we should carpet the whole Nollywood. Later this month, we (some actors) are going to commission a computer centre with over 20 computers, desks and accessories at Ejigbo Community High School, Lagos. It is also fitted with a projector screen. We would give awards to the best students in certain subjects, and outstanding teachers.”

Igboho Seeks Asylum In Benin Republic, Sues DSS And Malami

FG delegation in court, wants agitator in custody until extradition
Desperately wanted by the Department of State Services in Nigeria, with an international arrest warrant hanging around his neck, and facing immigration-related offences in Cotonou, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, is seeking asylum in the Republic of Benin, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

It was gathered that the 48-year-old activist resorted to the option after he was arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

Igboho was arrested with his Germany-based wife, Ropo, at the airport while they reportedly tried to catch a flight to Germany around 8 pm on Monday.

Although the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ruled on Thursday that Ropo should be released unconditionally as there were no charges against her, Igboho is spending his first weekend in a police cell in Cotonou.

He is being tried for migration-related issues after he was allegedly caught with a fake Beninese passport at the point of his departure to Germany through an Air France flight.

“He (Igboho) was already at the airport with a passport. The immigration officers suspected his passport to be fake and so they stopped him. A passport was allegedly forged for Igboho in the Benin Republic for the purpose of the Germany trip. At the airport, they discovered he was the one,” a source familiar with the matter told Saturday PUNCH.

The source, who craved anonymity, however, said although an application had been filed for Igboho as a political refugee in Germany, processes had also been completed to file another application for asylum for him in Benin Republic.

“Igboho has already applied for asylum in Germany and he hopes to file a similar application in Benin Republic in the coming days,” the source said.

The source also said that there was the possibility that the Beninese Government would drop the migration-related offences brought against Igboho over alleged forgery of passport.

The leader of Igboho’s legal team, Yomi Alliyu (SAN), had also in a statement noted that his client could not be extradited because the 1984 Extradition Treaty between Nigeria, Benin and two other countries excluded political refugees like Igboho.

Meanwhile, upon their arrest, Igboho and his wife were detained in police custody in Cotonou but the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ruled on Thursday that Ropo should be released unconditionally as there were no charges against her.

The court session lasted for about six hours with intermittent breaks.

The court, however, ruled that Igboho be remanded in police custody till the next date of adjournment which is likely to be next week.

Igboho spends weekend in Beninese cell, court resumes sitting next week
Although the Cour De’appal De Cotonou, adjourned the hearing of the case against Igboho, till Friday (yesterday), the hearing didn’t hold. The implication of this is that Igboho would spend the weekend in the Beninese cell.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the hearing would hold next week while the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, said it would hold on Monday. The group, led by ex-Senator Banji Akintoye, was in court to monitor Thursday’s hearing.

The group disclosed this in a statement signed by its Communications Manager, Maxwell Adeleye, and titled, ‘Update on Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho’s Case in the Republic of Benin.

How Soldiers Stormed Ladipo Market & Killed People – Eyewitness Narrates (Video)

Clash on Tuesday between soldiers and ticket touts at the popular Ladipo auto spare parts market in Lagos has left a number of persons dead.

But the casualty figure is uncertain.

While some said three persons were killed by the soldiers, others put the figure at five.

A trader said, “Some soldiers came here and started shooting directly at us. They aimed at us, one of them even positioned well to get a good view of the target before shooting.”

Many were reported injured.

The Nation gathered that a fight ensued between soldiers of the Operation MESA and suspected area boys said to be in charge of ticketing which led to the soldiers shooting.

Another account said personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) opened fire on traders following a disagreement over an article bought from a trader.

A fight ensued and the military man called for backup from his colleagues.

A mechanic said a military patrol vehicle was vandalised and set ablaze by a mob.

Another eyewitness told The Nation that a young boy was among those killed while four others sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to hospital.

A man, who gave his name as Paul, said they scampered for safety when they started hearing gunshots.

“We were here at our shops when soldiers came and started shooting. We all ran for our lives but some of our brothers were killed, others got injured.

“What we heard was that one of the soldiers had tried to return an item he got from a shop and that was what led to the scuffle,” he said.

Another trader, Emeka who claimed his brother was among those killed, decried the unfair treatment meted to them by the operatives.

“My brother has been killed. The operatives intentionally shot at us instead of shooting towards the sky. I even saw one of the operatives who positioned himself in order to get a good view of his target before shooting.

“A young boy was also among those killed,” he lamented and declined further comments.

A beverage seller, Iya Rukaya, confirmed a young boy was killed but added that she did not know how many people died.

At the time our reporter visited, calm has been restored although broken bottles could still be seen on the ground.

Most shops were closed while traders still around were in clusters discussing the incident. Also, there was no presence of policemen or military operatives on sight.

The Air Force denied that its operatives killed anyone at the scene, insisting they acted professionally and in response to a distress call.

The Force one person died.

NAF spokesman Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet told The Nation that the service’s personnel attached to the Operation (OPs) MESA were in the market in response to a distress call.

He said a call was put across by traders about a fight going on between a soldier of the Nigerian Army (NA) and a civilian debtor.

Gabkwet said upon receipt of the call, the team moved to the market but were attacked by angry traders who pelted them with stones.

“Two of our operatives sustained injuries,” he said, adding, “We are going to investigate the incident to know what really happened.”

The spokesman for Nigerian Army’s 81 Division, Major Olaniyi Osoba also said the matter was being investigated.
